Miniatures Behind the Scenes
The Shoot.
Early tests were conducted to ensure the model could convincingly mimic a full-scale hall, helping determine the right camera moves and gear setup. The modular design allowed for easy filming access, and I shot each 10-second time-lapse sequence using a DSLR on a motion control slider rig, with haze adding atmosphere to the miniature. Each shot was carefully documented to ensure accuracy when matching it to live green screen shots, capturing lighting, angles, and movements that aligned with the scale model.
The Build.
I hand-built a 1:12 scale model of the "Museum Hall" in my workshop, measuring 8ft D x 4ft W x 3ft H. The walls were sculpted in clay and plaster, molded in silicone, and cast in fiberglass, while the pillars and roof tiles were created using urethane resin. Every gold element was covered in gold leaf to reflect light. A full-scale pedestal was made for the actress to interact with during green screen shoots, complementing the scale model.
The Result.
Once both the miniature and green screen shots were captured, VFX artist Ben Kadie combined them, fine-tuning timing and size to match. Cinematographer Dakota Adney replicated the lighting, but I further refined the color correction to seamlessly integrate the actress with her environment. Building the environment from scratch resulted in something entirely original, with real physical properties that interacted with light and space realistically.
